Photo Friday: Dragon Boat Pond

The 9th was the Dragon Boat Festival, though in Xiamen the races happened earlier. The Dragon Boat Festival is generally said to commemorate the death of the poet Qu Yuan. When he was accused of treason, he committed suicide by throwing himself into a river. Because he was so beloved by the people, they raced on their boats to retrieve his body, which is how dragon boat races came to be. Here are some boats tied up on the dragon boat pond in Xiamen a few weeks before the races.
